University study reveals the best and worst NFL Fans

A study done by Michael Lewis of Emory University ranks all 32 NFL fanbases.

While most NFL analysts will agree that the New England Patriots appear to be the best team coming into the next NFL season, the issue regarding best fans always appeared to be a matter of personal opinion. However, Dr. Michael Lewis has conducted a study that objectively ranks all the fans of all 32 NFL teams from worst to first.

The study tracks the NFL fanbases by their fan equity, social equity, and road equity.  This means that each fan base was ranked by level of social engagement, attendance at home and on the road, and by gear purchased.

Essentially the more support that a fanbase that shows their team in any measurable way is ranked higher on the list, which is why it should come as no surprise that the team ranked the highest is also the team that is most despised by the other fanbases: the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas fanbase is often ridiculed for openly supporting the Cowboys even when the team is not doing well.

Rounding out the top five are the current champions the New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants, and the team with the most Super Bowl victories, the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is the bottom that will be sure to raise some eyebrows with the Kansas City Chiefs falling into the last place.

The Chiefs have been known for having one of the most intimidating home-field advantages in the NFL, but according to this study the Chiefs fans are the worst in the NFL. This study will definitely upset some Chiefs fans, but it is a very valuable way of measuring how engaged a fanbase truly is, not just in Kansas City, but around the world.

This study certainly explains how the Cowboys have been able to be such a profitable franchise even when the team is not having success. No matter what someone may think of the Cowboys on the field, it is clear by this study that their fans are the most engaged in the NFL, and it would not be a surprise to see teams follow their lead in order to get similar results.
