Could Wimbledon turn around Murray’s abysmal season?
The best British player of the modern era is struggling to get any success this season. Could Wimbledon provide some much-needed change of luck?
By all accounts, this has been a season to forget thus far for Andy Murray. The Scotsman has treated his fellow Brits and world tennis fans to some spectacular tennis over the past few years and got to world number 1. But it seems he has forgotten what brought him there.
After Wimbledon last year, Murray seemed like a man on a mission. He was going to get that number one spot away from Djokovic and there would be no stopping him. The end of 2016 was spectacular for him, notching up win after win and finally dethroning Djokovic. The only slight hiccup came at the US Open, where he succumbed to inspired Japanese star Kei Nishikori. However, matches like that happen every now and then. And Murray moved on. Boy did he move on! He destroyed everything in his wake and started the season as the clear favourite.
When Murray and Djokovic played a memorable Doha final at the start of the year, everyone believed it would be those two who would slug it out for the title of the best of the year. The Australian Open, however, did away with any illusions, with both Murray and Djokovic losing to players they should have won against.
As the season progressed, Murray failed to capture any fire or momentum, with a niggling injury not helping either. There was to be a ray of hope as Murray made it to the semi-finals of the French Open, narrowly losing to Swiss big hitter, Stan Wawrinka.
While that could have been the spark Murray needed, the start of the grass season showed that Murray was still lacking belief, losing to lucky loser Jordan Thompson. While some may say this doesn’t bode well for Wimbledon, Murray could still turn the season around were he to put in a strong performance in the first few round and after that, who knows, perhaps go all the way.
