El Tri vs. Die Mannschaft or La Roja

El Tri edged out Russia in their last group stage match to qualify for the semi-finals. Tomorrow, we find out who will be their next opponent.

Germany and Chile are not what we saw in the World Cup and the Copa America

Chile and Cameroon opened up Group B. A CONMEBOL elite should have gone to town on the “Lions”. Instead, Chile walked out of Moscow with a 2-0 win. Germany didn’t do any better against Australia. The “Socceroos” nailed two goals to Germany’s three. Sure, Germany won, but this should have been a blowout, not a close encounter.

The decent performances of the champions put them on par with Mexico and that’s not a good thing. There is a lack of aggression and confidence in Germany and Chile; which makes you question whether if they are legit contenders for the Confederations Cup.

Ok, Joachim Low assembled a much younger team for this tournament. It’s not an excuse for their uninspiring matches against weaker opponents. Low is a World Cup champion coach, so he knows what to do in order to win. Whatever he’s done the in the past has not been implemented in the present.

Juan Antonio Pizzi isn’t off the hook. He still has Gary Mendel, Mauricio Isla, Gonzalo Jara, Marcelo Diaz, Charles Aranguiz, Jean Beaussejour, Arturo Vidal, and Alexis Sanchez. Those are seven of the same players that won the Copa America last year. The Chilean offence is not producing champion-like results and their only saving grace is their defence for only conceding one goal (against Germany).

Mexico will be ready

When Mexico took on Portugal, they grab them by the horns. The European champions performed greatly but Mexico proved to be worthy opponents by forcing a draw. Russia and New Zealand weren’t easy, they put up fights, and fell short to a Mexican team that was persistent. That has been key to El Tri ever since last year; persistence and lack of fear.

Expect a very hard fought match between Mexico and the winner of Group B.
