Chelsea rejects FC. But…is that a problem?

After the arrival of Mo Salah in a record deal to Liverpool, is there anything wrong in what Chelsea have done with ex players?

And that’s the thing. I don’t see any reason for why Chelsea or their fans would see a problem in letting certain players leave and then get resold for bigger money a year or so later. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and now Mohammed Salah have left the club and then been bought for big money, or in Lukaku’s case, potentially rebought for big money. And it’s not like Chelsea haven’t done that before. Look at Nemanja Matic and David Luiz…

The current champions of England, yes, champions, are being asked by some of the media as to why they have let players leave in the past, only for them to succeed elsewhere. Lukaku has been magnificent at Everton, with the Toffees reportedly asking for £100 million, or around that figure, if they are to sell the Belgian. Another Belgian who left was De Bruyne, who was bought by Manchester City and has also flourished in the north west. But because they have made a fine career for themselves so far, it’s not Chelsea’s fault. Sometimes these players just aren’t what the club need at that time. If you’re a club like Chelsea, you need instant success if you’re the owner, and especially if you’re the manager unless you enjoy unemployment?

But these 3 specific players are an issue to me. It’s the players who have come through at Chelsea, who have won the youth version of the Champions League and countless FA Youth Cups in the last 6 years, but apparently Chelsea haven’t found them capable enough for the first team. When you continue to play John Terry after recalling Nathan Ake is the problem. When you’re interested in Bakayoko from Monaco but you’re reluctant to field Loftus-Cheek or Nathaniel Chalobah is the problem. Why doesn’t Chelsea have a plan for these youngsters long term when they’re so successful in the short term in their youth ranks. Tammy Abraham or Bertrand Traore would maybe excel in the first team but may never be given a chance!

Again, it goes back to this instant success argument. Cup competitions or 10 minutes at the end of a 3-0 home win just isn’t good enough. Loan moves to Belgium, Holland or the lower leagues isn’t good enough. Selling these players on is fine, like Solanki to Liverpool, of you feel you haven’t got room in your squad, but Patrick Bamford may say move me on earlier or play me, and was granted that move to Middlesbrough in the end. Many careers have been made elsewhere from Stamford Bridge, which is commendable, but I don’t think the issue are the aforementioned players at the top of this, but more the youth players behind them that still aren’t getting a run out!
