Are Monaco a victim of their own success?
After a magnificent season last term, are the chicks ready to leave their nest?
Last season in Ligue 1, Paris Saint Germain had a new manager in Unai Emery and maybe, just maybe somebody to cease on that chance where Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Laurent Blanc left, and the club from the capital would be overhauled. And that’s exactly what happened. Nice were the pretenders to the thrown as the best in France at one point, until free scoring Monaco took over and sealed the title in May!
And I guess their youth along with good management and timing of all these players coming together helped immensely. Fighting on more than one front as in reaching the Champions League semi finals and losing in the French league cup final to PSG, the league was possibly priority number one. With the age factor, and I mean youngsters such as Thomas Lemar, Tiemoué Bakayoko, Fabinho and of course, the most sought after talent in the entire football world Kylian Mbappé, sprinkled amongst real quality and experience in João Moutinho and Falcao, the team sparkled and had the media eating out of their hands.
But what that has caused is this pre-season frenzy of speculation, where the top clubs are aiming to cherry pick these players and scatter them across the biggest leagues in Europe. Personally, I would spend at least one more season in the principality and see what you could achieve as a group one more time. Or if you really love the club, grow and progress as far as possible, but money talks. With world record fees being banded about for Mbappé, and the money in the Premier League at an obscene amount, England or Spain look the likeliest destination for these players.
It is a shame though because under Leonardo Jardim, also a relatively young coach, they could conquer France at least and sweep the board of trophies if Paris Saint Germain spend unwisely or go through a minor rebuild. I guess the only saving grace for Les Monégasques is that next season is approaching a summer in which there is a World Cup and would any player want to scupper their chances in regards to form and happiness with this summer coming up?
The club have already begun preparations for next season signing the best player from Belgium in the superb Youri Tielemans, Swiss international goalkeeper Diego Benaglio from Wolfsburg, impressive ex Barcelona youngster Jordi Mboula on a five year deal as well as other youngsters Soualiho Meïté and Jordy Gaspar. If Monaco come calling players will come with who they already have and how they can reach the latter stages in European competition, but letting all their stars go would be a disaster, regardless of who they may and have brought in, seeing as Manchester City have already bought Bernardo Silva to perhaps begin this summer of transition?
In the end whatever happens will happen for the better or worse of the player and club, but as long as these players continue to grow and flourish, I’m sure the best thing will happen to them in the end… hopefully.
