Opinion: The Eagles swoop for De Boer
Betting suspended on the next Crystal Palace manager as they close in on the Dutchman.
Just this week I wrote a piece regarding Southampton and even though I circled around the thought of Frank De Boer going to St Mary’s, I was never confident he was the man they wanted on the South coast. However, attention turned from the South coast, to South London, where Selhurst Park seems the likeliest destination.
To be honest, and its heard enough times, London is possibly the new football hotbed in England right now. Players want to live there and so do managers. Of course that’s up for debate, but there’s plenty of examples to the approve that right. It’s just, I think of Frank De Boer and I think of top level or at least big clubs. Ajax and Inter Milan fit the bill. Okay, Inter happened to be a false dawn for him, but that level. Amsterdam, to Milan to…Croydon? Doesn’t have that ring to it.
Looking at the appointment and on the surface, what a coo for Crystal Palace. Still relatively young with previous success and won’t need a cheque book like Sam Alladyce had. Major noises coming out of Selhurst Park too that Steve Parish would rather put more money into the stadium than the team which is fair enough. Money has been spent on Cabaye and Benteke in the past, and with the Dutchman, he may focus on academy. The next Bolasie or Zaha may well be there?
I just believe that if everything clicks, with a name across Europe like De Boer, players will be drawn to the club, with potentially a better style of play with an atmosphere around the stadium to push the team on. Marco Silva proved you don’t need experience in the league as he did do well at Hull, regardless of relegation. With time I fell this could be a success!
