Next 5 years of Origin decided tonight
This Wednesday at Suncorp will influence the next 5 years of Origin in ways that nobody can fully understand right now.
Blues greats can sense the tide is turning. Ryan Girdler has said that NSW wins no matter what happens at Suncorp on Wednesday. He seems to have forgotten that we’ve been here before. NSW have been here quite a few times, and perhaps more importantly, so have Queensland.
Girdler was referring to the end of Qld’s famous ‘pick and stick’ philosophy. He sees the wholesale Queensland changes as the watershed moment where the Queensland era is over. Many blues supporters believe this too, ‘their new slice and dice approach is the end of dominance.’ After all, that’s what the blues have done for years, and for the first time in 21 years, the Blues have been able to pick and stick for two consecutive matches.
What Girdler says may turn out to be true, and any analysis would show that it’s more likely to be true now than at any stage in the last 11 years of Qld dominance, with the changing of the old guard draws nearer. As Phil Gould says ‘it’s their (the blues) time now’.
But do not expect Queensland to lay down. We’ve seen it too many times before, and if they don’t lie down tonight the new players being blooded will feel something special in that maroon jumper that will hold for the next 5 years, even as the old guard changes.
