First blood to McGregor

1190 views

As the Mayweather/McGregor super-fight is confirmed, the advantages seem to fall in Conor’s favour.

The super-fight has been booked. On Saturday August the 26th the undefeated king of boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr will square off against the UFC’s Conor McGregor.

Bookmakers and pundits alike give McGregor no chance, he is 11-1 whereas Mayweather is an odds on 1-16, but the weight class the fight is taking place in gives McGregor a substantial advantage.

The junior middleweight limit is 154lbs, given that the weigh-in will be a day prior you can expect McGregor to approach the fight weighing 165lbs or more. Mayweather has beaten bigger fighters in the past Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvares and Oscar De La Hoya but McGregor will represent a step beyond, he will enter the fight the weight of a super middleweight.

Mayweather’s last fight was at 147lbs and McGregor was recently the UFC featherweight champion at 145lbs. Negotiations have been handled by Dana White and the UFC and they have delivered for McGregor and handed him a significant advantage.

Brian Campbell CBS Sports questioned the negotiations for weight class and was told by Leonard Ellerbe of the Mayweather camp: “We had no issues with fighting Conor McGregor at 154lbs.”

Dana White told ESPN that McGregor expects to win the fight: “I talked to Conor McGregor this morning. He is absolutely, 100 percent positive that he wins this fight.”

Conor McGregor is taking a big chance competing with Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match but the fight at junior middleweight allows him a punchers chance against a much smaller man.

For boxing purists it must be galling to see Mayweather take a fight against a much bigger non-boxer but refuses to fight the undefeated Gennady Golovkin in what would be a true super-fight.
