Was Kevin Durant’s quest for Gold worth it?

With the game 5 win in the NBA finals, The Golden State Warriors, along with Kevin Durant, once again become world basketball champions. This final blow to the Cavs solidifies Kevin Durant, along with a few others, as first-time NBA champions and soon-to-be ring holders.

However, the journey did not come without its many criticisms. During the 2015-16 NBA season, Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder battled it out in a best of 7 series in the playoffs, only to fall short in a 3-4 series lost the to Golden State Warriors. With an end to his contract with OKC lurking, many speculated that he would leave in search of a better opportunity to secure a ring, an eventual goal of many and/or all NBA players. However, for some this goal would never be achieved regardless of their talent.

Came July 4th (Independence Day), Kevin Durant shocked many by not only choosing to leave his former team, but to join the very team that beat him in the previous playoffs. This was viewed as low, desperate and shameless by both critics and few fellows players. Former teammate and NBA star point guard Russell Westbrook even revealed how he was completely unaware of KD’s decision to leave the team, putting a strain on their once close relationship.

Many labelled him a traitor, snake and called him names like cupcake before the season even began. He, being the already talented player that he is, was judged and criticized by many for joining not only a rival team, but a team that had the most all-star players along with an extensive bench and considered the best team in the NBA. Other than just having won Finals MVP, his effort to becoming champion may be seen as riding in the backseat of a bus to a predetermined destination.

Was Kevin Durant wrong for seeking out a ring in such a fashion? Does he deserve less respect for his so-called desperate method to win? And does this taint the legacy of the newly crowned champion and all-star player?
