Subban-Weber trade: And the results are in

Last year there was much speculation on who “won” the Subban-Weber trade. With the Stanley Cup final being currently played, the results are finally in.

There was one trade talked about in the NHL more than any other trade last year: the Subban-Weber trade. Nashville Predators traded their captain, Shea Weber, for P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens. At the time nobody knew who was the clear winners and numerous rumors came about onto the reason behind the trade. A website has even been made about the trade.

Going on just stats alone, it would appear that Weber has the slight advantage from this season. Weber has +20 and Subban was -8. As far as points go for the season, Weber has the slight edge of 2 points. (Weber scored 17 goals; Subban scored 10, but Subban made up the rest with assists. Going by points in the previous two seasons, the two were almost dead even. They were both world-class defenseman around the same age, with Weber only three years older.

The clear winner comes now in the playoffs. While both teams made the playoffs, the Predators are playing for the Stanley Cup Final, the first time in franchise history. Regardless if they win, they have not had this much success previously (the furthest they advanced was the second round).

When asked if he ever got a reason for the trade, Subban said, “A reason? No . ..never.”

Both Nashville’s GM and Subban seem happy with the trade. This may go down as Montreal’s biggest mistake since trading Patrick Roy.

“I said that I felt I could win a Stanley Cup with this club and this team,” Subban said.
