Murray solid, but potential trouble awaits
Murray shook off his Queen’s loss to win his opener at Wimbledon. He faces the unpredictable Dustin Brown next.
British Wimbledon favourite Andy Murray made light work of his first round match against Alexander Bublik. Coming off of a first round exit at Queen’s, Murray settled into his stride quickly and displayed some of his trademark shots in the opener. In particular, the defence seemed as solid as always.
His defensive skills should come in handy against the German hot shot maker, Dustin Brown, a player of great potential, but an underachiever due to his unpredictability and somewhat lacklustre approach. Still, Brown should not be taken lightly by Murray as he ousted an in-form Rafael Nadal in 2015, displaying some unorthodox and highly effective shot-making against a shocked-looking Nadal.
Murray will have to be alert from the get-go, trying to get as many difficult returns in against Brown, who is a solid server with strong volleys. Persistence and patience could be a key to success as Brown is known to play some dazzling shots, but can go off the boil if consistently challenged.
As a tremendous defensive player, Murray has the skill set to beat Brown, however he will have to be on his toes. Also important will be Murray’s first serve, which needs to be firing on all cylinders, or Brown could take advantage and rush the net.
