Die Mannschaft’s road back to the World Cup
Germany did it, they picked up their first Confederations Cup victory. A questionable team was assembled to take on the best of the confederations and that didn’t stop them from dominating the competition.
On their way to the top, Germany overcame a feisty Australian and Cameroonian team; plus an equally elite Chilean squad. In the semi-final, the young Germans demolished el Tri, before reaching the final for a group stage rematch against Chile. The lone goal at the 20th minute crowned Germany as the 2017 Confederations Cup champions. What is next for Joachim Low and the champions? Prepping for the 2018 World Cup.
Germany will always be favorites
It doesn’t make sense to question whether if Germany is a contender to win the World Cup. It’s as dumb as questioning if the Patriots are contenders to win another Super Bowl. For nine straight World Cups, Germany made it to the quarter-finals at the very least; twice (1994 and 1998). From there on, they made it to two finals (2002 and winning the 2014 final).
Each generation keeps on improving
Ever since the 2010 World Cup, we got a glimpse of the destructive force that Germany will be. Germany topped Group D, scoring five goals and only conceding one. In the following two rounds, they displayed un-matched power. Quick work was made out of England (4-1) and Argentina (4-0). The Germans did fall at the feet of Spain, but a 3-2 whooping of Uruguay for 3rd place reminded us of their dominance.
The 2014 squad was even better. With the most memorable matches were Germany’s over-glorified practices on Portugal (4-0) and Brazil (7-1). A total of 10 players scored throughout the tournament, which is the equivalent of a whole squad. Thomas Muller (10 goals) is destined to tie or even break Miroslav Klose’s goal scoring record (16 total goals). Muller tallied those goals in two World Cups. He’s more than capable to nailing another five. That’s just him; not taking into account the other scoring options.
Germany’s A-squad is a force to be reckoned with. The Confederations Cup squad showed us how hungry they are and what they can do if they get called up to the A-squad. Now there is depth in the roster when choosing starting players for qualifiers and eventually the World Cup.
