BJ Penn’s Slow Decline Reaches New Lows
After BJ Penn’s slow decision loss to Dennis Siver, talk of retirement has once again started. The UFC legend and Hall of Famer, currently on a five fight losing streak, finds himself again in a tough situation.
Penn made a disclosed $150,000 as first reported by MMA Junkie in his losing effort to Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 112: Chiesa vs. Lee, but was being the highest paid athlete on the show worth opening the main card with a tepid performance against a more aggressive fighter? Penn’s previous 4 losses, while bad, were against the top of the Welterweight and Featherweight divisions. In this majority decision loss to Siver, Penn looked less like a mixed martial arts legend and more like an ordinary 38 year old man. The UFC has faced criticism for matching Penn up against younger more dangerous opponents in the past with many seeing Siver as a fair and winnable fight for Penn.
The question is where does BJ Penn go from here? there aren’t a ton of Dennis Siver quality fighters in the UFC and after losing to Siver himself, there is serious question as to Penn’s place in the Octagon. Penn, who has made it clear that retirement isn’t for him just yet, is in a tough position where continuing to fight would be fruitless at best.
