Jon Jones tests positive for banned substance following UFC 214

Jon Jones is considered by many to be the greatest pound for pound fighter to have ever graced the octagon. He’s also one of MMA’s most polarizing figures and his latest setback may have tarnished his legacy indefinitely.

“Is this guy really gonna mess this up again… by doing steroids or snorting cocaine!!” couldn’t have been truer words said by Jon Jones’ rival and opponent for UFC 214, Daniel Cormier. This was just one of Cormier’s many jabs at Jon Jones and that was just months before their highly anticipated rematch. Here we are weeks after Jon Jones successfully won his belt back with an emphatic knockout and has once again failed another drug test for a banned substance. TMZ has reported that the substance has been identified as Turinabol, an anabolic steroid. This adds to a long list of high profile incidents involving Jones. He’s failed a drug test for cocaine, run-ins with the law, and previously failed a drug test for a banned substance just days before UFC 200. Where does this leave Daniel Cormier?

During Cormier’s reign as the Light Heavyweight Champion, his legacy was under constant scrutiny. While Jones served his suspension, Cormier rose as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. While some accepted Cormier’s place as champion, others in the MMA community called him the ‘paper champ’. Oddly enough, Cormier was usually booed at UFC press conferences. Many felt he only won the belt as a result of Jones’ suspension. Where does this leave Daniel Cormier’s legacy? This will be Jon Jones’ second infraction under new USADA rules and what will most likely be followed by a lengthy suspension and major blow to a turbulent career.
