Opinion: 3 reasons why Neymar’s record move to PSG is a bad one
Brazil and Barcelona star Neymar has completed his 222 million Euro move to French side PSG that will see him earn 30 million euros a year.
Despite the wack of cash headed his way this isn’t the best move for such a great player in the prime of his career. Here are three reasons why:
1. Ligue 1 is inferior.
Neymar is leaving the Spanish league, the best league in the world, according to FIFA’s coefficient rankings, for a league that is 5th in Europe and a long way behind the top four. Only one French team has ever lifted the champions league trophy (Marseille 92-93), and, despite PSG’s intentions I don’t see that changing for many years to come.
Other than Monaco there is a lack of substantial competition in the French top flight and winning the league remains comparatively irrelevant, especially for someone with the class of Neymar.
2. Neymar’s level can only drop off
Neymar has said repeatedly that he moved for ‘a new challenge,’ but recent history has seen the performances of certain players drop off after arriving at PSG, due to the lack of competition. Thiago Silva is a case in point. The player arrived with the tag of ‘best defender in the world’ but has since lost his place in Brazil’s national side.
The team has also demonstrated a lack of ability to get over the finish line in European competition when it really counts. The 6-1 loss to Barcelona only a few months ago, when they took a 4-0 lead into the 2nd leg, is the most recent example. Ironically, it was Neymar himself that did the damage that night.
3. His chances of winning the Balon D’or are diminished
Messi and Ronaldo have dominated this prestigious award over the past decade but Neymar is arguably next in line to put his name on the trophy. One can understand him moving out from under Messi’s encompassing shadow. He should be the main focus of a club and have a winning team built around him. I just don’t believe that PSG is the team to help him to the top of the podium.
