Opinion: Why I am still a fan of the Los Angeles Chargers

Ever since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles, longtime fans of the team have been divided over whether to keep following them, switch to another team, or just stop watching the NFL. I am one of those fans who have chosen to continue being a fan of the now Los Angeles Chargers.

When the relocation was announced back in January, I briefly considered whether or not to continue being a fan of the Chargers. I have proudly been a fan since 2001. I have followed them through their many ups and downs, from LaDainian Tomlinson getting the single-season touchdown record to Nate Kaeding’s inability to kick a field goal in the postseason. One of the many reasons I chose to do my undergraduate studies at San Diego State University was just so I could live in the same city as my favorite football team.

I looked through the other 31 NFL teams to see if I really could support another team. However, I quickly realized that I could never be a huge fan of any other NFL team. For many NFL fans, they began following their football team due to proximity. That of course is not the case for every single fan. For example, anyone can be a fan of the Dallas Cowboys even if they have neither been to a Cowboys game or visited the city of Dallas.

I have grown up supporting and watching the Chargers. Some of my extended family members either are or have been Charger fans. My local TV stations mostly broadcast games featuring the Chargers. Several of my favorite NFL moments involve the Chargers, such as a 2005 regular season game where they beat the undefeated Indianapolis Colts or the 2008 season where they barely got to the postseason with an 8-8 record.

While I was very bitter about the move, I have come to accept it and move on with my life. For the foreseeable future, I will continue to be a proud fan of the Los Angeles Super Chargers.
