Top EU countries with most cars per 1,000 residents

There was an average of 497 cars per 1,000 EU residents in 2015. Luxembourg came out as a front-runner, while Romania turned out to be at the bottom of the ranking, according to the most recent report published by the European Office for Statistics – Eurostat.

With 661 cars per 1,000 residents, Luxembourg comes first in the European ranking. It is closely followed by Malta, with 634 cars per 1,000 residents, Italy – 610 cars per 1,000 residents, Finland – 590 cars per 1,000 residents and Cyprus – cars per 1,000 residents.

At the same level with the EU average and very close to it are Belgium, with 497 cars per 1,000 residents, the Czech Republic, with 485 cars per 1,000 residents, France – 484 cars per 1,000 residents, Spain – 481 cars per 1,000 residents, Greece – 474 cars per 1,000 residents, Sweden – 474 cars per 1,000 residents, Great Britain – 463 cars per 1,000 residents, Ireland – 436 cars per 1,000 residents and Lithuania, with 431 cars per 1,000 residents.

At the opposite end, the fewest cars per 1,000 residents are found in Slovakia – 375 cars per 1,000 residents, Croatia – 358 cars per 1,000 residents, Latvia – 345 cars per 1,000 residents, Hungary – 325 cars per 1,000 residents and Romania – 261 cars per 1,000 residents.

On the other hand, even though is at the bottom of the aforementioned ranking, Romania has registered in the first five months of 2017 the second most intense increase of new car registrations in the European Union, of 23,3% per 36,978 units. Within January and May 2017 there were 29,290 new cars registered in Romania.

Within the European Union, new car registrations have increased in the first five months by 5,3%, reaching 6,72 million units, according to data from the ACEA – European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

The largest increase in new car registrations took place in Croatia, being of 28,2%. Among the large auto markets, Spain registrations went up between January and May by 7,3%, and those in Italy by 8,1%.

Great Britain registered a 0,6% decrease of registrations, France had a 3,3% increase, and Germany had a 4,7% increase. In Greece, new car registrations increased by 4,3% in the first five months.

Ireland and Finland also had decreases, of 9,9% and 2,1% respectively.
