UK households throw away 40% of bagged salad every year. How can this food waste be minimized?
UK households throw away 40% of bagged salad every year, amounting to around 37,000 tonnes of food waste every year.
Salad is thus one of the most wasted household foods in Britain, with the bagged salad thrown away by Britons being the equivalent of 178 million bags.
A research from Tesco revealed that customers do not always buy the bagged salad with a meal in mind and this can lead to the salads ending up forgotten somewhere in a fridge corner. Moreover, present packaging also means bags are not strong enough to protect the leaves, therefore the salads spill out in the fridge and lead in turn to more waste.
Tesco, however, has been recently working on developing a new packaging that would reduce the food waste, with a thicker film and a sliding zip lock.
“Over the last two years we’ve been working with our growers to develop new packaging which allows customers to return to their bags of salad over a number of days with very little hassle or fuss,” said Adam Hill, a produce buyer manager at Tesco.
“We know many shoppers roll up their bagged salads after using them once and stick them at the back of their fridges where they are forgotten for days or even weeks,” he added.
Salad is not the only food that Britons waste. Figures from earlier this month showed that every day, 1,4 million bananas that are perfect for consumption are thrown away.
