There is the famous idea that life was so much better in the past, also known as “the good old days.” Given the new technology that exists in the present day, many people think that life is much more convenient than it was in the past. Life was a struggle during the nineteenth and early twentieth century because of the lack of inventions that did not come about until later on in history. For example, there are conveniences that exist in the modern day that did not exist in earlier time periods. Chores are much easier to do today because of washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

People today are blessed with technology because of the usage of electricity. Because of the challenges that existed in the past, the idea that the “good old days” were really better is not a valid opinion because life was much harder in the past than it is today.

One part of life that was very difficult in “the good old days” was cleaning. That is because washing machines and vacuum cleaners did not exist two hundred years ago. In the past, women would often have to do a lot of housework without the help of electricity. In fact, it is possible to say that cleaning is easier today because machines can wash clothing and dishes. Since dishwashers and vacuum cleaners were invented after the discovery of how to use electricity, it is safe to say that women had a hard time keeping their homes clean. This idea about cleaning being hard shows how life is much easier today than it was in the past.

Not only did cleaning become easier, but communication became easier as well because people invented new ways to communicate with one another. Modern technology led to the creation of gadgets like cell phones and Facebook, all of which makes talking to people much easier than it was back in the good old days. In fact, people were only able to communicate through postal mail in earlier periods of American history. Furthermore, sometimes mail would get lost, or the mailmen might even open the letters of other people while they spent several hours a day delivering mail to faraway places across the country.

Since Americans today have many ways to communicate with one another, people are now able to connect both in real life and on the Internet. Having new ways to communicate can allow people to keep in touch in ways that they could not have done so in the past. Therefore, the “good old days” were really not that great, and society has actually advanced in a way that makes life today much more convenient and also easier to communicate.

Even though technology makes communication easier, there are still many problems today that make the present day a hard time to live in. Life has, in fact, become much more convenient in the twenty-first century. However, that convenience comes with a price, and that price is the issues that are part of the Internet. Since anything can be posted on social media websites, like Instagram and Twitter, people sometimes end up hurting each other by writing mean comments or by posting inappropriate pictures of themselves up on the Internet.

Also, people sometimes spend much more time in front of their computers instead of going outside and breathing fresh air. The fact that people use the Internet more means that they forgot that there is a life that exists outside of computers in places like parks and nature. The “good old days” might not have been that great, but the present day has its own problems that people have to deal with every day. In a way, “the good old days” is really just an idea rather than an actual truth. That is because there will always be problems in the world.

The idea of “the good old days” probably originated from the idea of nostalgia. Being nostalgic involves looking back at the past, and wishing to relive the pleasant times that make the past so appealing. Even with such reminiscence, one must also remember that the past is in the past. All that people are capable of controlling are the present moment and themselves. Finally, the future might be unknown, but people can still affect their future by focusing on the present moment. In spite of “the good old days,” which sound appealing, those days are gone. Still, people can utilize the past as a way to create a brighter future. In the end, “the good old days” are really just a history lesson.
