Top EU countries with most deaths caused by assault
Nearly 4,000 Europeans died last year due to assault. Most victims were recorded in Italy.
Out of the 4,9 million deaths recorded in 2014 within the European Union, 3,650 (0,07%) were caused by assault. Most victims (64%) were men), according to a recent report from Eurostat.
Most cases were registered in Italy – 379, followed by Germany (377), Romania (360), Poland (338), France (322) and Spain (317).
On the other hand, the fewest were registered in Liechtenstein (1), Luxembourg (4), Malta (5), Cyprus (9) and Slovenia (21).
Nevertheless, the data has to be adjusted according to the population structure of each EU member state, the European Office for Statistics emphasises.
The highest rate assault was thus found in Latvia – 7 to every 100,000 residents.
Lithuania and Estonia complete the ranking, with rates of 3,8 to every 100,000 residents and 3,2 for every 100,000 residents, respectively.
At the opposite end, the lowest rates were found in Great Britain (0,14 for every 100,000 residents), Switzerland (0,4 for every 100,000 residents), Austria (0,43 for every 100.000 residents), Germany (0,46 for every 100.000 residents) and France (0,49 for every 100.000 residents).
The European average was of 0,7 for every 100.000 residents.
