Using these words on dating site profiles will guarantee success

When it comes to dating site profiles, some adjectives might let you go unnoticed while others could drive potential dates away. A recent survey done by on British site shows what epithets drive the most positive attention and what words should be avoided when looking for companionship.

One of UK’s leading dating website for married people, Illicit Encounters, revealed what adjectives should be used and which should be avoided when writing up a dating site profile. After looking at more than 400,000 profiles an analysis revealed that women that used the adjectives “sexy”, “honest” and “confident” got more attention from male users.

Men were the least interested in women that described themselves as shy (2%), trustworthy (1%) and, oddly enough, happy (0.3%).

When it comes to men’s profiles, women usually avoided references to physical appearance and instead wanted users that described themselves as honest (13%), intelligent (10%) and confident (9%). It could be said that women tend to value character over vanity.

Meanwhile, women stay away from those that have listed themselves as shy, curvy or, again, happy.

“It’s no surprise to see that both men and women are looking for someone whose honest and confident, but there are some interesting differences between the sexes”, says the site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant. “Most notably, men are, on the whole, gravitated more toward someone who really sells their looks; words such as ‘sexy’ or ‘curvy’ are all-important. While these aren’t exactly unimportant to women, you’ll find that they’re more concerned if someone’s intelligent or affectionate  – without that, it doesn’t matter how sexy you are.”

So honesty might go a long way but when setting up a dating site profile, as the evidence shows, modesty is surely not the way to go. Instead, a little arrogance might just give you the extra edge you need, the Illicit Encounters survey shows.

“With so much competition, the world of online dating is all about fine margins; anything that’s even slightly off-putting marks you as a liability,” Grant added.”Many people struggle to strike the balance between confidence and arrogance, instead adopting an overly modest approach, but that rarely works. Who wants to go out with someone who describes themselves as shy and introverted? Nobody, that’s who.”
