UK tosses out 1.4 million edible bananas per day, according to research
New research from UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s reveals that the country tosses out 1,4 million edible bananas per day, Inhabitat reports.
UK charity organisation WRAP was the one that assembled the study from Sainsbury’s, and the results were not so positive-looking. One-third of Britons would throw out a banana even if it had only a minor bruise, while one in 10 Brits would discard the fruit if it had a bit of green on the skin. Moreover, 61 percent of Britons don’t repurpose the discarded bananas in baking.
Paul Crewe, head of sustainability at Sainsbury’s, declared that they are creating an in-store area meant to inspire the residents to bake using bananas.
The area includes a Sainsbury’s recipe for banana bread, as well as the tools needed for baking the loaf, such as blenders, mixing bowls and baking tins.
“While we’re pleased with the success of the in-store trial, we’re determined to help shoppers reduce the number of bananas going to waste at home too,” Crewe stated.
The store announced in November funds of one million pounds for the second phase of the Waste Less, Save More project. The first phase included a pilot program in Swadlincote, and meanwhile, they have also taken actions like getting rid of multi-buy promotions in favour of the lower price structure.
