The Star Wars effect. Kylo, the fastest-rising name for babies in 2016
The name Kylo – like the villain in the Star Wars – The Force Awakens movie, has made the top 1,000 most popular names for boys in the United States and is the fastest-rising in popularity baby name, new data released by the federal Social Security Administration shows.
There was a total of 238 Social Security card applicants named Kylo born in 2016, making it the 901st most popular boy’s name for the year. The rank of the name Kylo jumped 2,368 since 2015, the data shows.
If in 2014 there were just 8 boys named Kylo in the U.S., last year the number rose to 245.
Also, the name Ray, like the character played by actress Daisy Ridley, was the name of 239 babies in 2014. In 2016, the number rose to 317.
However, if before 2016 there were no girls called Rey, in 2016 there were 63 female Reys.
The name Finn, like the character portrayed by John Boyega, was given in 2016 to 2,305 American babies.
The most popular names for Americans in 2016
According to data released by the federal Social Security Administration, the most popular boy’s name in 2016 was Noah.
Of the 3,929,560 applications for Social Security cards for those born in 2016, 19,015 of the boys were for Noah.
Noah is the most popular name in the U.S. for four straight years.
In the top five most popular boys names are also: Liam, William, Mason and James.
The most popular girls’ names in 2016 were Emma, for the third year in a row, followed by Olivia, Ava, Sophia and Isabella.
Emma and Olivia each accounted for about 1% of all baby girls, as it is the case for Noah, in the case of boys.
