4 Landscaping “Must-Do’s” For Saying Pride of Ownership

Tackling landscaping the proper way is half the battle of maintaining a great looking property. The other half is the choice of plants, mulch and layout you decide upon. Try these 4 tips for maintaining your property. You’ll have to put in the work, but taken one step at a time, you can get there.

Enhancing your property is a year-round commitment. But, not all of us have the time; nor do we have the endurance to tackle a landscaping project each week.

Here’s a set of steps you can take to ensure your property says “pride of ownership”. And, makes entering and exiting your home, a delight.

1.     Edge.  And for me, I say, edge everywhere. There’s nothing like seeing a clean, straight edge along sidewalks, driveways and landscape beds that says, “there’s a quality, well-kept property”.

Using an edger is a necessary step in furthering the appeal of your property, and the beauty of your lot.

Make sure to clean up thoroughly, leaving no clippings, soil, or other debris. Half of your edging success rests with how neat and even a job you do; the other half is, how well you clean up.

Note: Edging along landscape beds is an acquired skill.  Choose your ‘paint brush’ accordingly. A flathead spade, or shovel with a round point head can each be effective.

Make the width and depth even all along the rim of your landscape bed. Neatness counts.

You’ll love the results!

2.     Mulch. Laying fresh mulch is an essential step in maintaining the original beauty and essence of your property. Choose your brand and type according to your preference and desired results.

Researching what’s available at your local home hardware store is a trip well worth the time.

Make room in your vehicle, and, bring your checkbook…you may be making your decision on your preferred choice of mulch right there, and then.

3.     Fill existing landscape beds with new, additional plants. Your first try at landscaping may have left a few gaps for further planting, or there may be a need to replace plants that didn’t take.

Go through each bed and determine how you can enhance it with new plants.

If there are no gaps to fill, or plants to replace, you might choose to extend the existing beds to create some additional space.

Doing this will add a new look to your property, as well as, provide the additional space needed for your new plants.

Don’t forget to choose plants to compliment what’s presently there. You may choose to use the same plant to make an existing established one…into two.

Existing unplanted bed space provides you the opportunity to incorporate something new.

Have fun with it!

4.     Create new landscape beds and flower gardens. This may seem obvious, but many times you can overlook changing the overall look of your existing landscaping. You get used to it; it’s understandable.

Putting in a new bed with new landscaping and flowers can do wonders to expand the look and feel of the property.

NOTE: You will be adding new landscaping on a property that has existing, established landscaping. Plan accordingly.

Flowers bloom, thrive, and then go away, as is expected.

But, when it comes to landscape trees, shrubs and the like, you’ll need to pick mature plants to go along with your existing plants. Or, plants that grow expediently. . . ones that will catch up to your existing landscaping for a similar look in maturity.

You can do it!

Proper landscaping approaches to beautify your lot are essential steps in helping maintain its overall appearance. When you combine proper landscape maintenance with a well-maintained house, you have a win-win combination for saying “pride of ownership”.
