Is your pet right or left “pawed”? The test that gives you the answer
You definitely know whether your family members or friends are right or left handed. Have you ever thought in which category can your pet be included? Around 10% of people are left handed, but experts claim this percentage is not valid with dogs and cats.
According to a study from the University of Manchester, the percentages of left handed dogs and right “pawed” dogs are equal. When it comes to cats though, experts claim that 50% of them are right “pawed”, 40% of them are left “pawed”, while 10% can use both their paws equally well.
Stefanie Schwartz, from Veterinary Neurology Center, California, explained for Washington Post a few methods that can help you discover this aspect about your furry friend.
He suggest to add some tasty dog treat to a toy and then put in at the center of the dog’s visual field. Afterwards, pay attention to the paw he touches the toy with first.
You can do the same with various rewards you can put under the bowl of the animal or under the sofa. It is important so see the paw they will use in order to get their “prize”.
Another way when you can discover this is when you ask your pet to shake “hands”. In this situation, you need to see the paw that your pet will lift more often.
If your pet is a cat, you should know that when it really wants something, it will use its “main” paw most of the times, yet when it’s play time, the feline is tempted to use both paws.
