Life skills to master according to kids’ age

As they grow, kids tend to take the lead on certain tasks, such as feeding and dressing, but finding out when it is time to achieve some milestones can be difficult without a parent’s help.

According to a post made by blogger Amy Carney, children should be able to wake themselves up in the morning, make their own breakfast and lunch, fill out their own paperwork before they turn 13. She also said that once her kids became teens, she no longer felt responsible for delivering forgotten items to their school, meddling in their academics or stressing about last-minute “emergencies” that occur when her children planned their schedule poorly.

However, childhood behaviour expert Barb Harvey, executive director of Parents, Teachers and Advocates has a slightly different approach. She believes that most milestones are achieved depending on a children’s ability, maturity and interest level to master certain skills.

After a Facebook Poll, MNN shared the results regarding certain tasks and the age they are achieved:

Waking up in the morning

Some kids can do this at 7 years old, other when they’re 10. Carney expected her kids to wake themselves up once they hit middle school.

Packing school lunches

This depends a lot, with some children being able to do this as soon as first grade, while others in the sixth grade.

Handling issues with teachers and coaches

Many parents advise their kids to tackle the conflicts with their teachers and coaches in the fourth or fifth grade.

Laundry

While some kids were able to do their laundry by middle school, others were able to do this after they were off to college.

Managing time

Most parents agreed that kids should be capable of managing their stuff by middle school.

Despite all this, the only persons able to decide when it’s time for your kids to do certain things is you. Help your kids master certain life skills when they are ready.
