The future is no longer green, it’s yellow

Glastonbury reveller’s to help power the future of non fossil fuels with Pee Power.

Every year one of the greatest green festivals in England has to dream up new ways of dealing with the rather unpleasant subject of the toilets.

The organisers of this year’s Glastonbury festival have come up with a novel way to power the display boards, with urine.

There will be 40 urinals situated by the Cider Bus near to the Pyramid stage to turn reveller’s pee into power.

The technology is the brain wave of scientists at the Bristol Bio energy Centre (BBiC).

More than 1,000 litres of attendees’ urine is expected to flow through the system every day over the festival.

The fuel cells house bacteria, which literally eat human urine and create biochemical energy as a by-product, which then can be converted into electricity. It’s also a relatively cheap way of harnessing non fossil fuel, each device costing between £1-2 and with the prospect of unlimited urine, there is a strong possibility this could be in the future the non fossil fuel of choice.

“Pee Power” as it is being called, is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and will go later on in the year to Uganda for its first overseas trial.

With Glastonbury now only days away, it will be interesting to see how much electricity can be created over the festival. And how viable it is on long term.

The future of non-fossil fuel is no longer green – it is yellow.
