5 tips for breaking past writer’s block
Imagine this: your mind pushing idea after idea through your head. Fingertips punching in letters on your keyboard, forming endless streams of conscious and intelligent thoughts. A quick sip of whatever fills the cup beside your computer before they go back at it once more as the soft tapping of plastic keys fills the air around you. Until a switch goes off and just like that, your hands stop their typing as your mind goes blank and you find yourself staring at an ocean of white with just a few specks of black. Suddenly, there are no words and it literally feels as if someone has hit pause on your brain.
Okay, imagery over and let’s face it. You have writer’s block but have no fear. Below are three easy tips to help get the juices flowing again along with brief explanations on why each is helpful.
- Take a walk. A great writer (or several over the years) once said that writers can’t write about something they don’t know. We all have general feelings and experiences but let’s face it, not everyone has the boy next door or an epic sci-fi adventure lying in wait. Leaving the glowing screen behind and going out to experience the world is a great way to get the juices flowing again because you never know what you’re going to see or hear. A simple walk to the local coffee shop or around the corner can be just what you need in order to punch out the next chapter of your book or next A+ paragraph.
- Read a book. A lot of good ideas can be found in a simple fictional work or whatever genre floats your boat. Good writing, not just fictional, can only be achieved by reading other works and incorporating themes and other literary elements and techniques into your own. Who knows, you might even find a good quote for your essay.
- Yoga. Stimulation and relaxation. Good vibes and loads of stretching for those tense muscles. Also, ending your stretch with a rewarding bath soak never hurt anyone.
Altogether they might not sound like much but what each of them allows you to do is think, which is crucial for the whole process. Each of these suggestions forces your mind to work out the kinks as it bounces between meeting whatever deadline and processing everything else around you even if it takes a backseat. Sometimes, all we need is a space to clear our heads and watch as the rest just simply falls right into place.
