Discovery Channel founder is selling his Colorado ranch. Take a tour of “the place where the earth opens up to tell its story”
John Hendricks, the founder of Discovery Channel, is selling his amazing Colorado estate, named West Creek Ranch, for $149 million.
It features some Discovery Channel’s stuff, such as an astronomical observatory, and dinosaur footprints.
The nearly 7,000-acre property is situated in Mesa County, Colorado, with parts in Grand County, Utah, being accesible by a 55-minute drive from Grand Junction Regional Airport.

It is nearly a virgin land, since 4,000 aces of the property is placed in a conservation easement, which means that no roads or structures can be built in that area.
The main house has a 22,000-square-foot space spread out over four levels, all accessible by elevator – enough for eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms and even a home theater and a billiard room, not to mention the amazing views from all around the home.
It comes with an additional farm that is a “shelter” for 8 horses and 5 bisons, an airstrip and hangar, a helipad, stables, and even an astronomical observatory, equipped with a 20″ Meade telescope and a rotating copper dome.
Moreover the estate offers a two-bedroom guest house situated near a creek on the property, with its own garage.
“West Creek Ranch is a place where the earth really opens up to tell its story. When you look up at the walls of the canyons, it’s all these layers of earth that go back 300 million years,” Hendricks said in a press release announcing the listing through Sothesby’s International Reality.
He’s selling the home now because he and his wife, Maureen, intend to spend more time traveling in Europe and working on the nearby Gateway Canyons resort, that is also their property.
