Teenager’s struggle to overcome addiction and rape revealed

Nadia Ismail’s autobiography tackling sex, drugs, family conflict and rape is ultimately a tale of hope

Nadia Ismail’s new book, Sunshine After the Rain: One Girl’s Journey to Positivity, was originally written as a secret memoir to herself as a kind of self-therapy and was never meant to be shared with the public. The writing process allowed her to work through painful memories and post-traumatic stress. However, she now hopes that by sharing the issues she went through as a teenager, including drink, drugs, rape and a family divided, will help other young women in similar situations find help.

Now an avid traveller, writer, actress and entrepreneur, Nadia grew up in a household in conflict run by her English Catholic mother and Egyptian Muslim father. She left their one-bedroom flat in north London as a naive 16-year-old and soon fell victim to people who were willing to take advantage of her.

The Amazon best-seller chronicles her nights of drink and drugs, which turn into days of hopelessness and regret. After forcing herself to put on a false persona to attract men and experiencing a harrowing rape, Nadia decides something has to change. But the conventional methods of anti-depressants, counselling and abstinence don’t work. She has to face her demons in order to gain control of her life.

Nadia said: “I originally started the book as part of my self-therapy and never really had any plans to publish it. I suppose I was always worried about exposing my innermost secrets and feelings and then being judged.

“Last year I went travelling and then something changed and I thought I can’t be scared of the what ifs. If people want to judge then it’s their problem, not mine. It’s scary in one sense that my work – my life is out there for the taking but if I can help one person change their life around, then it was worth it.”

Nadia Ismail has gone on to set up a site dedicated to women in the creative industry who wish to showcase their innermost talents and connect with other women at www.talentreel.co.uk
