The five “musts” of being a gentleman
A Quora thread asking users what makes a gentleman got creative writer Nicolas Cole’s attention. He stepped forward and shared his wisdom, according to the Independent.
According to Cole, these are the five things a man has to have in order to be considered a gentleman:
Being able to pause the desire to move forward and analyze your present situation can sometimes be really helpful, as Cole suggests. A man lacking self-awareness is “nothing more than an unstoppable wrecking ball”.
2. The ability to play
Women love to play, as it is a feminine act. While men might equate playing and dancing to being vulnerable, women often perceive this as the exact opposite. Cole says the “ability to play is gentle and attractive.”
3. Humility (and accountability)
A gentleman should be willing to reflect and recognize what he has done to contribute to a certain situation. He shouldn’t be afraid of admitting his wrong-doings. Furthermore, he should be capable of knowing who he is without validation.
4. Responsibility
Cole believes a gentleman “is someone who can handle life’s responsibilities gracefully”, who should be able to “manage his own challenges while still putting others before himself.” Stress shouldn’t be an excuse to behave in a bad manner.
5. Forgiveness
A gentleman should know how to forgive. He shouldn’t forget or continue to allow the same mistakes to happen again, but he should be able to “let go of old feelings within himself – for his own sake, and the sake of the other person”.
