Considering the recent Grenfell tower accident, the pressure on the appliance industry has increased by many folds. There have been serious questions put up on the quality of the products made as well as on the safety measures adopted whilst using the products.

The most ignored aspect while using the products are the wiring system and many times, a faulty wiring system has risen to the most dangerous breakouts.

We give out the best possible measures whilst using home appliances:

Regular check on the gas pipes– A lot of times we tend to neglect the gas pipes. A minor burst in the gas pipe could result in the most dangerous fire outburst in the city. One of the probable reasons for the Grenfell fire is faulty gas pipes of the building. They burst and become a catalyst to fire to spread across the building very quickly and aggressively.

Regular fire safety checks– At times, the builders overlook the fire risk assessment test, allowing breaches of fire-resistant structures. According to the UK government report on fire statistics, no smoke alarm was present in 12,000 (31%) dwelling fires in 2013-14 in Great Britain. A smoke alarm was present but did not operate in 19% of dwelling fires!

Faulty electrical appliances and faulty wiring– Though, they might sound like tiny appliance to cause fire, but according to BBC report, UK has reported the majority of fires caused by fridge freezers and faulty electrical appliances.

Lack of water sprinkler system– Automatic water sprinklers may come very handy in case of fire breakouts. Under current law, all new residential blocks over 30m high must have sprinkler systems fitted. One of the reasons cited for Grenfell fire was a lack of a water sprinkler available at the site. The fire station tube could also reach to a height of 17th floor, leaving the rest of the floors and the people fending for themselves.

Lack of knowledge of the fire exits– A lot of times, we tend to miss the obvious information provided to us. While residing in any complex or residential building, we are given a set of drills in case of fire, earthquake or any other calamity. But most of the times, we tend to over- look them. Having regular fire/ quake drills may solve this problem. Residents should take the drills seriously and even teach them to the children, who are highly susceptible to get caught in these extreme situations.

Though we cannot predict a calamity, we can take measures to minimise its consequences.
