A municipal-identification card with many benefits for New York City living

In January of 2015, New York City introduced its New York municipal-identification card, IDCNY.

The identification card (an alternative form of identification for residents of New York), was introduced to assist the many residents of New York; including homeless persons, undocumented immigrants and others who may have been strained from obtaining a government issued id. The IDNYC card is free for residents until December 31, 2017, and is valid for five years. It also provides residents with a number of benefits such as discounts on medical prescriptions and entry to city buildings. Other benefits of this card include:

  • Free access to NYC Museums & Zoos- MOMA PS1, American Museum of Natural History, The Bronx Zoo and many more.
  • Use as a Library Card- Residents who have an IDNYC can visit any New York Library and use their id in place of the NYPL Library Card.
  • Opening of a Bank or Credit Union account- Residents can open up a bank or credit union account with IDNYC bank affiliates (see IDNYC website for specific institution listings).
  • Discounts on Gym& Bike memberships- Residents can Join the YMCA and get a 15% discount off of family and adult memberships, as well as 15 % annual discounts on annual Citi bike memberships.
  • Discounts on Movie & Broadway shows- Also includes discounts on New York City attractions and tours. Cardholders must register by entering id card number and email with Entertainment Benefits Group.
  • Educational and Class Discounts-  Residents can sign up for a NYC based cooking, writing or class of their interest via “CourseHorse” and get 15% discounts off of classes.
  • Veteran Discounts – United States Veterans have the option of adding a “Veteran” designation listed on their IDNYC for additional services and discounts provided by the city of New York.
