Little Mermaid statue, painted red in anti-whaling protest
The famous Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, Denmark, has been vandalised once again in an anti-whaling protest, BBC News reports.
The Little Mermaid statue was painted red and in front of it was written in English, “Denmark defend the whales of the Faroe Islands” – possibly a reference to the drive hunting of pilot whales in those islands during summer.
According to the authorities in the Faroe Islands, around 800 pilot whales are killed every year in the territory, coming from a population of 100,000 around the islands and 778,000 in the North Atlantic.

This isn’t the first time that the statue has been vandalised. In 1964 and 1998, Little Mermaid was decapitated, and in 2003 she was knocked off her base, most likely with the help of explosives.
