This sunken ship off the English Channel can explode at any moment
SS Montgomery, a ship that sank off the English Channel during the Second World War, holds an explosive secret. Its cargo of 1,000 tonnes of bombs can explode at any moment.
SS Montgomery sank in 1944, as it was carrying weapons intended to be used by the Allies. The ship dragged her anchor and became grounded on a sandbank, around Medway Approach Channel.
A salvage operation lead to the recovery of some of the bombs, but even after more than 70 years, 1,400 tonnes of live ammunition is still on board.
The ship will soon be featured in a documentary narrated by Ian McShane, directed by Ken Rowles and produced by a team in Kent.
After five years of filming the wreck, in which they revolved around the question ”Is this a time bomb threatening London?”, the producers are looking for crowdfunding so as to complete and promote this unique project.
It is thought that if the ship explodes, it would be one biggest non-nuclear blasts ever and lead to the destruction of Sheerness, a nearby port.
