Forbes’ top 100 highest paid celebrities reflects pay inequality
This year’s Forbes list of highest earning celebrities includes only 16 women and once again features P. Diddy as number one, having banked $130 million over 12 months.
Although P. Diddy hasn’t released any music lately, he increased his wealth to $820 million thanks to a North American headline tour in 2016 and various releases from other artists under Bad Boy Records, according to the Independent.
Beyonce came in second place, having accumulated $105 million over the year thanks to her “Formation” tour and the release of Lemonade. Her husband, Jay-Z, came in 55th thanks to TIDAL.
The third place was occupied by J.K. Rowling, with $95 million, having released “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” last year, along with writing the screenplay for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them“.
After Rowling came Drake with $94 million, thanks to unstoppable touring. Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo came in 5th place, with $93 million.
However, an extremely low number of women made the top – only 16, one more than last year. This reflects the huge pay gap between men and women in the entertainment industry. The top women made $822.5 million cumulatively, compared to $892.5 million last year.
Not a single female actor made the list. Meanwhile, ten male actors were featured, including Adam Sandler, Jackie Chan, Kevin Heart and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan.
Taylor Swift was hit the hardest. She went from $170 million in 2016 to $44 million in 2017, mainly due to the fact that she hasn’t gone on tour.
