Sports writer calls Rihanna ”fat”, gets slammed for it

A sports reporter wrote an article about pop star Rihanna getting ”fat” and the Internet back fired at him, Daily Mail reports.

Chris ‘Spags’ Spagnuolo, a writer at Barstool Sports, published a 350-word article based on pictures of Rihanna in New York City in which the star was wearing some rather baggy clothes which, combined with unflattering photo angles, made her appear as though she had gained weight. Spagnuolo thus decided to write a piece called “Is Rihanna Going To Make Being Fat The Hot New Trend?”, in which he considered that Rihanna has been ‘enjoying that good room service a bit too long’ and worried about the influence she might have on young women.

The article quickly sparked outrage on the Internet, with Cosmopolitan.com calling the website ‘garbage sports site’, while Allure magazine wrote a tweet saying ‘Using misogyny & body-shaming women as a way to earn Twitter engagement is a pretty pathetic path to success. Just FYI.’

While the link with the piece was in the mean time taken down from the official Twitter of Bastool Sports, it still remains on the author’s personal Twitter, who has since started to complain about cyberbullying after users accused him of being ” tasteless” and “dumb”, among others. “U called women fat & you’re crying bully? You don’t have ownership over a woman’s body & your opinion is shame-based. Get a brain,” wrote one Twitter user.

Despite the criticism that his piece was both rude and sexist, Spags appears unwilling to admit that what he did was wrong.
