Learn about the extraordinary career of one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses.

Natalie Wood was a very unique actress. She had the leading role as Maria in the musical sensation West Side Story, and she had a remarkable career prior to her tragic death in 1981 at the age of 43. She might be gone, but she is certainly not forgotten. Her career included three Academy Award nominations and winning two Golden Globe Awards, including a special recognition called the Henrietta Award as “World Film Favorite – Female.” Natalie Wood’s legacy continues to endure more than three decades after her unfortunate passing.

Born on July 20, 1938, Natalie Wood become a promising newcomer when she had the supporting role of Judy in Rebel Without a Cause. This role allowed her to win a Golden Globe and receive her first Academy Award nomination. Her career reached a high point in 1961 after starring in Elia Kazan’s Splendor in the Grass, which allowed her to earn her second nomination. That same year, West Side Story won ten Academy Awards, including “Best Picture.” She might not have been nominated for West Side Story, nor did she win for Splendor in the Grass, but Natalie Wood still shined brightly that year. That luminosity faded away when she supposedly drowned on November 29, 1981. Her death might be a bit mysterious, but Natalie Wood will always remain a bright and shining star.
