Best television shows to binge-watch during summer break
When most TV is on hiatus and school is out for the summer, check out these shows to beat the summer heat!
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
This optimistic sitcom from 30 Rock creator Tina Fey is the best show to keep your mood up during political turmoil and long, hot summers. The Office’s Elle Kemper is adorable and compelling, along with Jane Krakowski and Tituss Burgess.
Master of None
Aziz Ansari’s Master of None is a beautiful comedy that tackles topics from dating apps to workplace sexual harassment. Ansari uses experimental film techniques in the vein of Louis CK’s Louie, but in a show that is more rooted in reality and everyday millennial life.
Handmaiden’s Tale
The dystopic Hulu mini-series, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 book, is a beautiful and terrifying look at a possible, miserable future. It stars Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss, Gilmore Girls’ Alexis Bledel, and Orange is the New Black’s Samira Wiley, among others.
Switched at Birth
This Freeform teen drama, which recently finished its sixth and final season, spun a typical soap twist (two babies, switched at birth) into a show with deep and nuanced portrayals of Deaf culture, mental health, date rape, and a wide range of other relevant topics.
Casual
Hulu’s dramedy starring Michaela Watkins is a dark look at family life and dating after divorce (hence ‘casual’), complete with a maladjusted brother and sexually promiscuous daughter.
