This Japanese food artist carves fruits into beautiful masterpieces

Japanese artist Gaku transforms simple fruits and vegetables into amazing works of art using only an X-Acto knife.

In honour of Japanese and Thai traditions of food carving, he often carves traditional Japanese floral and waves patterns that are so detailed and intricate that you could forget the ephemeral nature of his art, according to Inhabitat.

Some of his works include real and fantastical animals, such as crab designs carved into an apple or dragons carved into a banana. Gaku says that bananas are a good option for practising this art, as they are cheap and available all year round.

Gaku, who is also a chef, began food carving as a hobby. He works really quickly, considering that bananas, apples and avocados often turn burn within minutes due to oxidation.

The photos can be found on Gaku’s instagram, which has around 60,000 followers. Gaku has also carved pumpkins, carrots, zucchini and some type of leaf which he transformed into grasshoppers. After finishing and photographing his creations, Gaku eats them.
