Review: A Cure For Wellness

From polarizing director Gore Verbinski comes this gothic, chilling horror effort.

A Cure For Wellness is not only impeccably crafted and stylishly shot, it’s also pretty great.

At a 150-minute run-time, it races along and the attention to detail is truly spectacular, with incredible casting in young Dane DeHaan and a plotline that feels surprisingly fresh, even when it goes over rehashed territory.

But that’s Verbinski’s greatest talent. The man behind Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring and The Lone Ranger always has one credit to his name: The man creates a visually compelling picture.

Even the worst of his efforts are watchable for their beauty, and A Cure For Wellness is a nightmarish, enterprising film. It makes up for what it lacks in script originality with what Verbinski actually puts on screen.

This truly is a remarkable feat, bringing familiar tropes and making them feel new again.

DeHaan channels a commanding presence in this film — his best since Kill Your Darlings — and though it wasn’t a cure for the box-office, this film will remind you just how beautiful filmmaking can be.
