Transformers: The last knight non-spoiler review
Does Transformers: The Last Knight suck? Yes it does, but read on anyway to find out why.
Transformers: The Last Knight is the fifth installment in the much-maligned Transformers film series by director Michael Bay. While the first Transformers in 2007 might get a pass by most people, almost everyone will agree that the franchise took a dip in quality afterwards.
The problem with Last Knight is the same as all the other movies: weak characters, story that makes no sense, terrible pacing, and boring action scenes.
Is there any redeeming factor to this film? Well, the 3D is actually pretty good. Last Knight is one of the few films that are actually shot with IMAX 3D cameras (most films are just converted in postproduction), and those particular scenes look spectacular. However, the problem with those action scenes is that unless there’s a solid story behind it, it just feels like noise, and that’s what this movie is: just a lot of noise.
Another redeeming thing: this is supposed to be Michael Bay’s last outing in the franchise. I say “supposed” because Bay has cried wolf many tries. Each movie has been said to be his last one. Will he mean it this time? Well, that mostly depends on how well this one does at the box office. On a $210 million budget, plus marketing campaigns and distribution, Transformers: The Last Knight would have to make at least $500 million worldwide just to break even. If it makes significantly past that, then we can expect Bay to return.
For now, the Transformers franchise is scheduled to continue with a prequel, Transformers Universe: Bumblebee, scheduled for release on June 8, 2018 and a sixth film scheduled for June 28, 2019. The box office will determine if these plans change in the future.
