5 future cult classics

Here are the next films to become cult classics. Had they a better screening most would know these films verbatim instead of just thinking they saw the title somewhere.

5. 3:10 to Yuma

Director James Mangold has had great success over the years, and impressed everybody with his gritty Wolverine interpretation. Then they did it again, and Logan was one of the most memorable Marvel films they’ve ever released. But after Walk the Line Mangold put out a western starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. Based on the John Wayne oldie and a story by the immortal Elmore Leonard, this was a sure win, but the film just barely made its budget back.

4. Scott Pilgrim Vs the World

With Edgar Wright attached, most who know Shaun of the Dead are already in whenever he pops up. With the impending classic Baby Driver this year, he’s set for another good outing. But Scott Pilgrim failed to even bring in half the budget let alone meet it, and with a cult but strong fanbase one would’ve thought the film would’ve been an instant hit. Instead it resides in the back of people’s minds, but not where it should be, for when given another chance this movie should surely shine.

3. 16 Blocks

I liked this film in theaters and somewhat forgot about it. Then I saw it again and was surprised at how much came back so quickly and how well it held up. Mos Def plays an extraordinary streetwise man with a stutter and a giant heart, while Bruce Willis genuinely gives one of his best performances since Die Hard. This is a slower movie and may bore some, but those who like police dramas with a good story are in for a movie night.

2. The Nice Guys

This is preemptive strike. I don’t want this film to be another cautionary tale, its much too fun and vibrant to be mistaken for just another movie with a groovy poster. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling are both great and hilarious, its more of a serious The Other Guys.

1. Lucky Number Slevin

Morgan Freeman. Bruce Willis. Ben Kingsley. Josh Hartnett. Stanley Tucci. Lucy Liu. Bubba from Forrest Gump. This alone should be enough reason to check this movie out, with snappy writing that makes you laugh yet nervous and excellent performances by everyone involved. This film like The Prestige or The French Connection make you want to rewatch the thing right after its over because you end up staring at the screen asking yourself, what just happened?
