Wonder Woman and why we need more like her

Shattering the Glass Ceiling, Wonder Woman opens the door for other female heroes/leads.

Raking in a whopping $577 million nationwide as of date, Wonder Woman is proving that female superheroes are not just here, but ready to take over the world. In a world dominated by men or “machismo”, as I’m sure my grandmother would call it, Diana is consistently being told that she “can’t” throughout the movie but she merely brushes her haters aside and proves that the word doesn’t exist in her dictionary. The world needs more heroes like Diana especially today where women are still being told what to do and the wage gap is still a vast ocean.

But, let the facts speak for themselves:

1.     57% of our nations women are in the workforce as of 2015 (based on a current population survey by US Bureau of Labor when compared to men)

2.     21.4% reported wage gap in comparison to men in 2014 (data provided by US Census Bureau)

3.     Nearly 30% wage gap between women (of all nationalities) who have earned degrees when compared to men-this also varies between degrees but women with advanced degrees have largest gap!

Shocking but they’re all true and though companies are aggressively working to change this and women are venturing into fields that are male dominated (ahem, engineering), there is hope. Then, there’s Wonder Woman, an inspiration that stands even taller than the powerful script that helped bring her to life. But why do we need more of her? Well, the answer is simple. Young girls need her. Girls who are part of an entirely new generation and it’s important that they know that we run the world as Beyoncé famously croons. Young girls need an icon just like they need to see a woman holding her own on a screen beside men. They need to see that those powerful women don’t need men saving them and they can in fact save men just the same and what better way to show it than turning to Hollywood?

But, let us not just stop there. In the vast world of comic book heroes, all nationalities are represented, but let’s bring them to the big screen. Let’s break not just gender norms, but the conventional strains put on women of other nationalities while we are at it. Show the world that the color of your skin does not define you just the way where you are from should shape what you will do.
