Why waiting 2 years for the final Game of Thrones season would be fine
With fans of the show already having to wait a year at a time for each season, the patience is running short for more of Game of Thrones. This is why patience is what we need for this show.
Ever since the show launched on HBO (Home Box Office) in 2011, Game of Thrones has become a worldwide phenomenon that already has talks of a possible spinoff series for the show. The show is best known for its depiction of the struggle for power, the staggering amount of main characters dying that would give Harry Potter fans PTSD, the historic references in the story, and of course the dragons. After six seasons and 60 episodes, the writers for the show have made it official that the last 2 seasons of the show will air only 13 episodes combined with each showing longer than normal ones in the previous seasons. For those who watch the show, you will know that the overall story has many subplots with countless crucial characters who play big roles for what will come later in the show. These last two seasons will be the turning point of the show where all these storylines combine to close out the show.
The 7th season of the show will come out on July 16th airing 7 episodes which differs to earlier seasons airing in April. The reason being is that the end of the show is now based in the winter so they had to shoot in locations with heavy snowfall, putting them on a later schedule to shoot the new season. For six seasons, the phrase ‘Winter is Coming’ has been thrown around like the term legend in the hip hop community. But now it is finally here. The actors have apparently filmed the show through dangerous conditions so you know the show does a great job at limiting their use of CGI for the show to give the show a realistic feel. The show has been known for shooting on scenic landscapes and this season will be no different. According to PageSix.com, the cast has been filming in Iceland “amid 100 mph winds and a minus 25 centigrade (minus 13 Fahrenheit) wind chill.” If the actors involved on the show are willing to go to these extremes to give as realistic of a performance as possible, then the writers are going to do the same in terms of finishing the overall story of the series the best way possible. There have been rumors that the show may run the 8th and final season in 2019 which would be two years after the upcoming 7th season airs. Many people do not want this but this is actually something that should be done for the better of the story.
The actual book series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ which the show is based on, has actually been surpassed by the show based on progress of the plot. George RR Martin has publicly stated that he was experiencing a ‘writer’s block’ when trying to finish the six book, something he has been trying to complete before the airing of season six which was in April 2016 and it has not been finished to this day. As fans already know, the TV show has gone in a different direction than the actual books. As different as the show and the books are, the books are still something to base the show off of but now there is nothing to base it off of for the next two seasons so the writers including Martin who is a part of the making of the show will have to create something entirely new. In the show, their are multiple agendas that the main characters look to carry out while an evil force known as the white walkers is coming to destroy everything and everyone.
It is interesting how most people in the show are ignoring this while there are others who are well aware of the possible apocalypse and are trying to fight for the greater good of mankind. The challenging part for the writers seems to be how will these characters come together, put their differences aside, and join forces to fight this evil army of death. How will these characters grow once the threat arrives, who will they become, and what is the final fate of their world? These are questions that will be answered in the 2 upcoming seasons. The show has a duty to give the best possible answers to in the short amount of time they have left with the show. Nobody wants to see all these story lines just rushed just so the show can be finalized. There needs to be a finale that brings all the important characters together organically and it will be a challenge with these conflicting figures of power as well as those with no political influence in the show. The vast differences between the characters in the show that are set to come together and whether this will bring unity or more conflict is at question. There are so many subplots and character developments that need to be completed by the time this series comes to a close so why wouldn’t someone want the writers to take as much time as they need to collaborate and find the best solutions to all these questions. The story from the books could actually have 2 extra seasons with all the material in their stories but HBO is forcing the show to finish early. This is why the writers of the show need to take their time and give fans the epic ending that they are expecting.
