With Tekken 7 upon us, where is Soul Calibur?
It’s no secret that the seventh entry in the Tekken series is due to land. Longtime fans and newcomers alike are rejoicing for what could just be a renaissance for the fighting game genre. But amid the hype and excitement I ask myself; ‘what about Soul Calibur?’
Soul Calibur, originally known as Soul Blade or Soul Edge, is the ‘sister series’ of Tekken, and doesn’t quite boast the reputation of Namco’s more beloved Tekken games, but still has a considerable following regardless, drawing in fans from around the world with unique characters and fighting style. What seperates it most from Tekken is the fact that in contrast to it being a hand-to-hand fighter, it is instead a weapon-based fighter. If you wish to launch your opponent skyward with a huge greatsword, or rapidly hack away at them with twin daggers, there are a multitude of weapon styles to choose from. The games also focused more on character customization, featuring a mode that allowed players to create their own unique characters from Soul Calibur III-onwards.
The latest title, Soul Calibur V, was poorly recieved from fans largely due to the updated roster which removed or replaced fan favourites, and a story mode that some found lackluster especially as it took the place of arcade endings specifics to each character. Regardless, it added the most customization options the series had seen, and made changes to the gameplay that genuinely improved the experience. Something that always struck me was how smoothly the combat flowed online, rarely missing a beat unless some serious lag was going on.
Even now fans of the series remain hopeful for a sequel, over five years after the release of Soul Calibur V. Unfortunately aside from some vague teases and leads that went nowhere, Namco has been silent on the matter. With E3 right around the corner, will their wishes be granted?
