In a developer update from Game Director Jeff Kaplan, Blizard Entertainment announced Overwatch will receive a new melee-focused hero named Doomfist.

Teased, rumour and speculated upon, Overwatch finally revealed the enigmatic character players believed existed since the game’s launch a year ago. Doomfist is the name of this new character and his presence was hinted at in the early days of Overwatch as heroes fought for ownership of his all powerful gauntlet.

The creators of Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment, revealed in a developer update Doomfist would be the latest character to join the fold of heroes. Highly anticipated and cytogenetically enhanced, Doomfist becomes the 25th playable hero in Overwatch’s roster. Equipped with a massive gauntlet on his right hand, Game Director Jeff Kaplan explains the new hero will fit into the offensive class.

Doomfist is a Nigerian-born martial arts specialist who lost his arm in the Omnic Crisis long ago, a sprawling conflict which shaped the world of Overwatch. To date, Blizzard has released several new heroes since its launch, including new maps and content to keep the community growing. There was a biotic medic Ana, a hacker named Sombra and a sentient robot named Orisa. With each hero came an expansion to the game’s roster, lore and gameplay dynamic.

What makes Doomfist distinct is his emphasis on melee combat, wielding an iron fist to perform an array of gravity-defying moves. Doomfist’s moves include a rocket punch which sends the hero flying forward, damaging anything in his path. Doomfist can also perform a rising uppercut which launches the hero into the air, combining perfectly his seismic slam which sends him crashing to the ground.

With this sudden arrival of details from Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch’s newest hero might rekindle excitement in many players as they flock to try out this new hero. Doomfist’s role in Overwatch’s team based gameplay will be interesting to see evolve over time. PC players have the luxury of trying out the new hero now since he’s available on the PTR, Overwatch’s Public Test Realm. However, for the rest of us console players, we’ll have to wait just a little longer before we can play as the cytogenetically enhanced Nigerian.
