Starbucks has been ordered to pay $100,000 to a woman who suffered coffee burns

Starbucks will have to pay $100,000 to a woman who suffered first- and second-degree burns after coffee spilled on her lap.

Joanne Mogavero a 43 year-old Florida woman who, according to her lawyers, suffered first- and second-degree burns from their coffee, will receive $100,000 from Starbucks, after a Duval County jury decided that she has to receive $85,000 for pain and suffering, physical impairment, disfigurement, inconvenience and loss of capacity for enjoyment of life, but also $15,000 for medical bills.

The woman endured permanent scarring after the lid on a venti-sized Pike Place coffee popped off at a Jacksonville drive-thru window in 2014. Her attorneys said that this led to the 190-degree beverage to pour on her lap.

According to a copy that HuffPost obtained, her lawsuit said the lid “was either not attached properly or was defective”, her lawyers adding that the coffee giant should warn its customers that their lids have a tendency to pop off.

A Starbucks representative reportedly testified, during trial, that the company receives 80 complaints a month about lids coming off and leaking like this, but they said it “would not be relevant” to warn customers of this risk, Mogavero’s lawyers said.

The company is considering an appeal and is standing by the employees involved in this case, a spokesperson for Starbucks told Fortune.
