What to do before your first day of work

Entering the workforce might be an overpowering experience for young professionals. Gina Argento, president and CEO of Broadway Stages advises them on how to make a good impression.

After the interview process and the landing of the job, new employees wonder how to make the best first impression. Argento thinks that whether the employee will impress his or her colleagues depends solely on the new hires’ personalities and adaptation skills, as Fortune reports. Since every workplace has a different environment, with different dress codes, different office relationships and different visions, the adaptation process can vary greatly:

“For example, my company, Broadway Stages, is fast-paced and philanthropy-focused,”, Gina Argento wrote. “We look for individuals who are able to understand corporate culture quickly and adapt. We also expect them to treat their coworkers like family.

“Being able to adapt to a new office culture quickly is key. It’s so important that I will often ask interviewees how well they can blend into new work environments.”

In order to adapt to office life as quickly possibly, it would be best if you understand fully and clearly your new role. You can do this by researching the role before your first day, using sites like Glassdoor and analysing your company’s website. Additional questions can be solved with the help of human resources or the direct supervisor. Having an idea regarding who is who will help you with remembering names and titles.

Another method of making a great first impression would be arriving early and leaving at the same time as everyone else before you learn when people usually come and go. Another important element you should pay attention to is how people communicate in the office: face-to-face or over a messaging service? This is particularly significant because communication is the key to success in any company.

Being a team player is also essential. You can do this by enthusiastically volunteering to do jobs, never badmouthing the company, listening and communicating efficiently. Most importantly, you should not stress. You have been offered the job, so you must have made a great first impression already. Simply stick to it and learn to adapt.
