Energy labels for appliances will be modified
European MEPs adopted on Tuesday, May 13, a new and more solid A-G scale regarding the energy efficiency of appliances. The new labels will not include the “+” signs anymore.
According to a document released by the European Parliament, consumers will soon be able to choose more efficient products in order to lower energy consumption and costs, and producers will be encouraged to innovate and invest in products that are more energy-efficient.
The first labels with the new scale and lacking the “+” signs (“A+/A++/A+++”) will be implemented the earliest at the end of 2019.

The labels will be printed on products, while the online version and information regarding the product will be available for download on the Internet. Moreover, should there be updates that will affect the energy efficiency of a product that was already purchased, the provider will have to inform the customer. At the same time, any visual ad or technical promotional material will have to make reference to the class of energy efficiency and the scale available on the label.
According to the European Commission, the new system might save 200 Twh or 200 billion kWh of energy, which is the annual equivalent of the energy consumption in the Baltic countries.
At the moment, the annual electricity consumption for an average home is between 2.500 and 5.000 kWh.
Denmark is the EU country with the highest price on energy: 30,88/kWh. The other top 5 countries are Germany (29,69 eurocents/kWh), Belgium (25,44 eurocents/kWh), Italy (24,13 eurocents/kWh) and Portugal (23,5 eurocents/kWh).
At the opposite end are Malta (12,57 eurocents/kWh), Lithuania (12,31 eurocents/kWh), Estonia (12,08 eurocents/kWh), Hungary (11,14 eurocents/kWh) and Bulgaria (9,56 eurocents/kWh).
Great Britain came ninth in the general ranking, with 19,51 eurocents/kWh.
